Today is the day that the first egg laid is due to hatch. How long do I wait before I know whether or not the egg is fertile? When I check the nest box now, Selma doesn't even move (she used to get out quickly!), but today she just stays on the eggs looking at me (like, 'I dare you to stick your hand in here now lady!'). Could this mean she knows something is going to happen?
Frustrated, and far too excited for my own good,
Deb:D

they will start to hatch in the order laid 18-20 days later. usually the hen will give up if nothing happens. if not, remove them a week or so after the due date
if she is sitting tight, the first egg might be getting ready, or already hatched and she is sitting tight on top like a good mum!
Awww! That sounds cute the way you put it Buuzbee!

We have 2 babies, so far 2 eggs have missed their hatch date, but 1 more due to hatch tomorrow. I am thrilled with 2 babies, would have been thrilled with only 1! They are getting so big, the oldest is getting some pin feathers, can't wait to be able to hold him/her. I am waiting until they are 2 weeks old before I take them out of the nest box, I am worried about hurting them.:budgie: :budgie:

Congrats! that is wonderful news. 2, maybe 3 is better than 0, lol
any colors in the pin feathers yet?
pics please!!!
(dont forget to check their feet & beaks for stuck poo & stuff, i dont remember if you are a first time breeder??? lol) and no, you wont hurt them. i handle all my chicks from about day 5, they bond with me better that way!

Okay, okay! I will hold my baby soon (tonight or tomorrow!). I am so excited! So far the pin feathers only appear white, but boy is he/she getting big! I will check feet and beak tonight, but there is no poop that I can see anywhere in the nest box. Maybe momma is just really clean?:p

Congrats on your new babies, I just found out that mine are a pair, maybe in a few months I will beable to breed them. I have been reading on breeding both books and online and I have several people who want babies if the breeding process is successful. again congrats and the best of luck with the babies, keep us posted.
